Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)

The New York Times is reporting today that amazon.com is working on a Kindle with a larger screen. The current version is version 2 and it’s slim and compact. According to the New York Times article, amazon may release the new version of Kindle as early as this week.

As we all know by now, most of the print media have been struggling financially because of diminishing readership and advertisement revenue, due mostly to the rise of internet media. The New York Times reports that the new device from amazon may save by offering a convenient method for the traditional newspaper and magazine publishers.

It is an interesting development. For me, Kindle, with its price tag of $359, is a bit too pricey even though its convenience of purchasing a book (at a very low price) on the spot is very tempting. I have a friend who bought Kindle and she loves it.

  1. [...] was a big day at Amazon.com. As I posted a couple of days ago, Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon.com, held a press event today, announcing the new version of Kindle, [...]

  2. I had purchased a Kindle (1st generation) for my daughter’s birthday and found myself borrowing it more and more frequently. When the Kindles were on back-order at Christmas, my husband and I traded birthdays so I could get my kindle in March instead of having to wait for my May birthday.

I have now had it for three days and am delighted. I love this device. Kindle 2 is better than Kindle 1 in several ways:
–Much less easy to inadvertently change pages. The buttons are much better placed and require more pressure so I am not as prone to change pages without meaning to.
–I like the new Menu system. It replaces those nasty buttons on the back, which meant you had to take the Kindle out of its cover to access the Wireless button.
The one thing I am having trouble with is the slider button on the top, which replaces the on/off switch on the back. It seems much less responsive and makes it harder to go from sleep to wake or from on to off. This may get easier over time.

    Some notes of advice:
–Always read the sample chapter before you buy a book. At $10 a pop, these books are not cheap, and no matter how many good reviews a book gets, you may regret the purchase after you make it. Reading that sample may save regrets (like skimming a chapter in the bookstore…)
–Get a case. The new kindle does not come with a case like the old one did, but the new kindle case is much, much better and the kindle is actually locked in place so it will not fall out like the old kindle did. I actually dropped my daughter’s kindle once (although it didn’t break it cerainly gave me a few new grey hairs).
–Be very careful with putting things on top of the screen. I have not tested this with the new kindle, but we did have a broken screen caused by the dog stepping on my daughter’s kindle while it was lying on the floor. Direct pressure on the screen is dangerous, so be careful.

I love the kindle! No more late night trips to the convenience store to get a (usually very bad) book while I am traveling. No more lugging around five books just to make sure I don’t run out of reading material. No more bookshelves running out of room or half-read books laying around on coffee tables. No more having to prop a book open with coffee cups (etc.) while I am drying my hair or doing other things that require hands but not a mind. I am a true believer. Thanks amazon :) .
